Five decades worth of space junk (amounting to around 100 million pieces of steel and aluminium waste of various sizes) are in orbit around our globe, In a huge experimental effort, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) recently attempted to employ a 700-meter-long wire to catch debris (that included bits of satellites and old rockets) now effortlessly orbiting Earth and drag them into the pull of the Earth’s atmosphere to burn-up.

Unfortunately JAXA’s attempt in the end was unsuccessful as the actual cable needed to drag debris was unable to be unleased. It was an deeply disappointing end to the endeavor as the concept itself was sound.
