Biological scientists are developing new materials inspired by leaf veins. These materials are making ‘energy transfer’ extremely efficient. The concept is now being translated to improve rechargeable battery performance allowing them to last much longer and charged more rapidly.

A team of international researchers led by Xianfeng Zheng of China’s Wuhan University of Technology and Australia’s University of Queensland carefully investigated how leaf-veins are able to optimize flow of food and water. The investigation led to the development of the new porous material known as Murray’s material.

Scientists are already imagining the effects of this new material for efficiency at larger scales for instance reactors. If the technology can be transferred the concept will lead to totally new levels of efficiency.
