GROVER (the Goddard Remotely Operated Vehicle for Exploration and Research ) is NASA’s polar explorer. It has just completed field-tests in Greenland, coping with some of the harshest environments on Earth.
It performed at -22 Fahrenheit and 30 mph freezing winds, successfully collecting and storing data over an 18 mile area, then transmitting it back to home-base in real time. It’s solar-powered battery system allowed it to operate for 12 hours before any recharge.
NASA’s spirit of adventure is expanding as they begin to integrate renewable energy into their repertoire.
