GREEN TO THE MAX

The new Kern Centre at Hampshire College, Massachusetts, USA is green to the max! Created by Bruner/Cott & Associates, the 5,000sq.M building has been designed to satisfy the status of the ‘Living Building Challenge‘. Such status includes being totally solar-powered, having composting toilets and using rainwater harvesting.

The stone and wood used for the build were all sourced locally and remain ‘red-list‘ compliant (meaning no toxic chemicals were added at any stage).

The Kern Center is an outward-looking community space with floor-to-ceiling windows that allow the interior to connect to the abundant surrounding natural beauty. It primarily acts as a welcome center for parents yet its environmental features are also used to teach about issues of sustainability.

The Living Building Challenge is the ‘world’s most advanced green building standard‘. Meeting its criteria would take Hampshire region closer to its carbon-neutral dream. We’ll keep you posted!
