The new Kern Centre at Hampshire College, Massachusetts, USA is green to the max! Created by Bruner/Cott & Associates, the 5,000sq.M building has been designed to satisfy the status of the ‘Living Building Challenge‘. Such status includes being totally solar-powered, having composting toilets and using rainwater harvesting.
The stone and wood used for the build were all sourced locally and remain ‘red-list‘ compliant (meaning no toxic chemicals were added at any stage).
The Kern Center is an outward-looking community space with floor-to-ceiling windows that allow the interior to connect to the abundant surrounding natural beauty. It primarily acts as a welcome center for parents yet its environmental features are also used to teach about issues of sustainability.
