Vivobarefoot (a London-based footwear designer) are collaborating with Bloom (a materials innovation company in San Diego) to create the world’s first molded-shoe made from algae! The new Vivobarefoot ‘lace-up’ is made from this environmentally friendly material offering the environment a well-needed break. Bloom is currently using a process that turns lake algae into a closed-cell foam called ethylene-vinyl acetate, or EVA.
Ordinarily this material would be made from petroleum-based sources. Their material is a first in that it uses a plant-based alternative to the petro-foams that continue to dominate the industry.
