The Mars ROVER’s multi-panel solar array is able to absorb sunlight to power its mission. However, solar power limits what the ROVER can explore as it must land and travel where it can get enough sunlight to re-energize batteries.
For future missions, NASA has developed an alternate power source, increasing the area on Mars that can be studied.
The current and future missions will use the ‘multi-Mission Radioisotope Thermolectric generator.
This latest space battery can reliably power deep space missions for longer opening-up the whole area of the planet to exploration.
